Dear Tom:
On the first day of mail during my imposed sabbatical, I received a postcard from a football teammate. The card read simply, “Of all my friends, you seem to be getting the most diverse experiences out of life. David.” I have kept David’s card for over fifteen years and continue to draw on his humor and refreshing attitude.
David didn’t see my sabbatical as a tragedy. He saw it as a new experience on life’s journey. It was up to me how I used the opportunity. I found David’s card when I returned home from my transplant surgery. As I read it again, I smiled and reminded myself that another “diverse experience” had come my way.
Each of our lives is filled with ups and downs. What we realize is our lives are like a light wave that ocilates up and down as the light continues to move forward toward its destination. The ups and downs
aren’t the destination—the destination has been predetermined since birth. The experience of the journey is the interesting part.
Your Friend,
Webb
PS: Suzy asks, “How much of the journey is within our ability to control? How much is controlled or even
pre-determined by the attitudes and actions of others and our environment.” Pretty good question wouldn’t you say? W.
Loved this post. Loved it.
