No matter how good an athlete, there always gets to be a point when it’s time to let the sport get along without you. Getting to know when/where that point is, can be difficult, and all too often the athlete hangs on a little too long. That happens a lot because the athlete can’t imagine him/herself without the sport. They fear change.
The same is true for political or business leaders. More often than not that is because the leader can’t see themselves out of the limelight or their old ways of doing things as being part of the problem. They fear real change.
Fear of change drives us all to inaction.
That is why self-examination annually during Lent is so important. We use this time to examine our motives and our life with a goal of determining if we are in the place God wants us to be. That for certain doesn’t mean that place shouldn’t change from time to time, in fact I expect as our life goes from one phase to another God wants us to go to another place, as well. Lent is a time to examine whether it is time to move on to another adventure, opportunity, or experience. Running in place gets very old after a while.
