I was paid a nice compliment this week. I work with a physical therapist once a week for my arthritis. Recently, I have worked out at the same time with the same group. This Monday, I entered the room and one of the patients who is dealing with some serious disabilities said, “Good morning. I love it when we work out at the same time because you always have a big smile on your face.”
I thanked her, but it caused me to think. I wasn’t even aware I was smiling, certainly not every time I entered the work out room. Something I wasn’t conscious of doing, brought pleasure. Just as importantly, her compliment brought me pleasure, as well. Neither of us were acting out of character, our words/actions were small but as important as anything we did that day.
Being pleasant, smiling, and polite do not take any effort on our part, they may be small, but they can produce big results.
