We have a soup kitchen a little more than a block away from where we live. They serve lunch and provide fresh groceries twice a week to an ever-growing number of people. Several of my friends volunteer to cook and pass out food. Most of our neighborhood finds ways to support the kitchen. The kitchen recently sent out a flier reminding those who support it that in our county alone over 160,000 individuals are food insecure with over 19% being children. The flier reminds us that inflation has increased the cost of food by 16.7% over the prior year. I am confident that Charlotte is not alone when it comes to hunger and homelessness.
Charlotte has countless numbers of organizations that are trying to help with hunger and homelessness in our community. I am sure your community is the same, but the problem only seems to grow in numbers and severity. Maybe, the only solution is to throw as many darts at the board as we have hoping one will come close to a bulls eye. I wish I had an answer, but until someone does what is important is that we remember to find and support every outlet we can that feeds the hungry, cares for the sick, and provides shelter.
As for our leaders, I understand the need to provide for a national defense, but the crumbs from the table of defense contractors would feed and house a lot of people. Perhaps, it’s time for a vocal few to remind the rest of their colleagues of that fact.
