A dear friend sent me a reflection that talked about New Years Resolutions and Rules for Life. I spent a lot of time this morning with this reflection and especially the phrase, “reorder our hearts and form our wills.”
Birthdays, Anniversaries, significant dates, are all good times to reorder one’s heart. Just about anytime is good for the task. More importantly, is the question, “how does one reorder your heart?”
After a lot of thought, I’m convinced that part of reordering is to be able to answer the question Suzy and I were asked often when we first moved to Charlotte. After being introduced to someone within a matter of minutes we were asked, “Have you found a church home?” In both Little Rock and DC we could answer the question easily. The churches we attended felt like and were to a large extent — “home.”
A lot of my friends in Little Rock have moved to different “homes” since we left. An occasional examination of where we call our church home is an essential part of reordering our hearts. One may to decide that their church home is still what is needed or may determine that in order to reorder one’s heart a change is required. Either way, I am convinced having a “home” is an important part of our periodic “reordering of our heart.”
