Suzy might come home from the grocery and say, “I ran into ‘Jane Doe’ but at first I didn’t recognize her.” I certainly have encountered and old friend, but wouldn’t recognize him or her because the encounter is out of context. For example, a work associate may not be recognized at first when we run into them at a play or a sporting event.
Today’s Bible lesson remind us that Jesus wasn’t recognized by Mary Magdalene or his disciples after his crucifixion. I suspect I would have trouble recognizing an old friend right after i attended his or her funeral. Maybe that’s why we remind ourselves that God is a “living God.”
God appears to us out of context all the time. When we aren’t looking for him, he appears. God might show up in the form of an infant’s smile, in a natural disaster, or maybe even in the aisles of Harris Teeter. In the strangest of places God reveals himself to us, comforting us with his presence and ready to engage in conversation.
