My granddaughter was not excited about giving up candy for Lent, but she is all in for pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. She takes after her grandfather — not sure about the sacrifice, but excited about the feast.
I remember one shrove Tuesday when I got several of my brothers to join me in a Lenten discipline. Men whose names were Razor, Breeze, and Big Easy gave up “Grape Pop” and “Soda” and engaged in daily prayer, reading, and Sunday worship. My brothers had never heard of Lent but joined me and we kept each other true to our mutual discipline. These men were my friends during a very difficult time for each of us, and it would have been easy to forgo Lent since we had little to sacrifice, but somehow sacrificing a little when you have almost nothing proved to be even more significant. God was with us in what many would call a “God-forsaken place.”
Consider a Lenten discipline with a friend or neighbor. You will provide needed support to each other.
