Put out into the deep water. — Luke 5:4b.
The phrase “put out into deep water” can have a number of meanings, depending on the context. In general, it means to venture into unfamiliar or uncharted territory. When Jesus tells Peter to “put out into deep water,” he is calling him to leave behind his old life and to follow him in a new and challenging direction.
When I was younger I had no fear of swimming out into the ocean beyond where I could touch bottom. The last few years, I tend more to wade in the shallows. As I think about it, my life has also come in from the deep, as well. Perhaps it is time to “put out into deep waters” once again, especially when it comes to my relationship with God and my meditative life.
It is time to force myself beyond the shallows where I know it is safe, and to venture into the depths of thought with my writing and my relationships. I don’t know why as we mature we seek out only safe paths, it is time once again to “put out into to the deep .”
