What the game brings you is in direct proportion to what you bring to the game. — Old coaching adage.
I came across the above in a completely different context. t had nothing to do with sports. The author was talking about isolation.
The saying generally means that the amount of enjoyment you get out of a game is directly related to the amount of effort you put into it. If you are willing to put in the time and effort to learn the game, practice, and improve your skills, you will be more likely to have a positive experience. On the other hand, if you simply expect to be entertained without putting in any effort, you are likely to be disappointed.
This statement can be applied to many aspects of life. In order to get the most out of anything, it is important to be willing to invest your time, energy, and focus. No matter what type of game you are playing, or activity you are engaged, the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it.
Certainly APPLIES TO SURFING!!
