At Pawleys Island, the ocean is on one side of the main road and the marsh is on the other side. The house we rent faces the marsh. Most mornings we wake to absolute quiet and a stillness in the waters of the marsh. It is the perfect setting for meditation and converstion with God.
It is difficult to find a retreat that is quiet and still. When you do, appreciate it and take advantage. Ever wonder why Jesus would escape to the wilderness on a regular basis?
All of our lives and homes are filled with activity, sounds, and demands. Truly “getting away” to the peace and quiet is a rare commodity.
When I was on sabbatical, my brothers made a lot of noise most all of the time. Put sixty men in a locked room and quiet becomes an unknown. I would have to sneak into the chapel during chow time to be still with my thoughts.
Perhaps it is my sabbatical experience that makes me treasure “quiet time.” Whatever the cause, I know that God speaks in a very soft voice most of the time. He/she is much easier to hear when I am enjoying the quiet and still.
Where is your quiet and still place?
Inside my deep breathing. Sending blessings.
