Loved Well

Today is Memorial Day.

This morning’s meditation was filled with memories of my friends, teammates, and neighbors who have died. I tried to pull up a memory of each. The problem is my list is growing exponentially — a result of getting older.

What do I try and remember about each — a time of laughter, a smile, a good story, etc. I admit my memory is selective, but it’s my meditation. I avoid on this day memories that are not pleasant.

One thing I can say about most of my physically absent friends is that they “loved well.” In fact, if one tries hard, we can pull out of the memory banks for most people we know, living or dead, a time when that person “loved well.” We are at our best when we love one another or God’s creation.

I can think of nothing that will please me more than for people one day to say about me, “He loved well.”
