Change

Change is a curious, even paradoxical, force in our lives. On one hand, we crave novelty and difference. We yearn for the shiny new car, the dream vacation, the fresh start a new job or relationship can offer. We flock to the polls, eager to elect someone who promises a different path. “Do something different” becomes a ubiquitous mantra, echoing even within the sacred halls of our faith.

On the other hand, this very same desire for change can turn into resistance when it comes to ourselves. We cling to our routines, even when they become stale. We bristle at the suggestion of altering our familiar habits, even if they’re not serving us well. We question, and sometimes even resist, the advice of loved ones who nudge us towards a healthier lifestyle or a more fulfilling path. It’s as if our bodies and minds become living embodiments of inertia, stubbornly resisting the current of change.

This apparent contradiction highlights the delicate dance we perform with change. We crave it externally, seeking novelty and excitement in the world around us. Yet, internally, we often prefer the comfort of the known, even if it’s stagnant. The key lies in striking a balance.

Perhaps the answer isn’t to completely eliminate one side of the equation. Instead, we can cultivate a willingness to embrace change in a way that complements, rather than disrupts, the core aspects of ourselves. While we may experiment with new hobbies or career paths, there are fundamental values and beliefs that serve as our constant north star.

The unwavering presence of God’s love can be a powerful anchor in this dance with change. Regardless of life’s circumstances or the choices we make, God’s embrace remains a constant source of comfort and guidance. Change may swirl around us, but within that embrace, we can find the strength to navigate the current, embracing new experiences while holding steady to what truly matters.
