In The Chosen, Mary Magdalene’s words about being “grateful for the light” struck a chord. We see a stark contrast between the darkness that consumed her before encountering Jesus and the light that now fills her life. While darkness still appears, it no longer frightens her.
While my life hasn’t mirrored Mary’s dramatic transformation, I can certainly relate to the experience of living in a world of light and shadow. Like you, I experience stretches of sunshine – days filled with the warmth of family, the laughter of friends, the joy of new discoveries, and the comfort of cherished memories.
But on occassion, darkness creeps in. It may arrive as a wave of grief over a loss, a pang of loneliness, or a nagging reminder that my body isn’t invincible. In those moments, it’s easy to get swept away by the shadows.
Mary’s story offers a powerful lesson. Her darkness made her appreciate the light with an intensity most of us can only imagine. It reminds that even the deepest shadows eventually give way to the light.
During your own dark days, take heart. These periods may feel overwhelming, but they are not permanent. Just like Mary, choose to focus on the light that still exists – the love of your family, the unwavering support of your friends, the quiet beauty of a familiar memory, or the simple act of enjoying a sunrise or sunset.
Embrace the light, big and small, and find gratitude for its presence in your life. Remember, even the darkest night cannot extinguish the light that burns within you.
