Many mornings, staring at the blank page for The Hubbell Pew, feels like facing a daunting blank canvas. But this morning, inspiration arrived in an unexpected melody. A Cyndi Lauper song, “Time After Time,” stubbornly clung to the corners of my mind, a tune that wouldn’t be ignored. I wouldn’t call myself a Cyndi Lauper fan, and lyrics often take a backseat to the music, this time, the words struck a chord.
“If you’re lost, you can look and you will find me, time after time.” The chorus, particularly, resonated as a powerful declaration of love. I could almost hear a full-bodied gospel choir belting it out on a Sunday morning, their voices echoing with unwavering devotion.
This sentiment mirrored a poignant piece I read earlier in The Washington Post. Sally Quinn’s account of her final year with her husband, Ben Bradlee, detailed his heartbreaking battle with memory loss. The article resonated deeply, painting a picture of a love that remained steadfast even as Ben became increasingly “lost” figuratively. Sally, the unwavering presence, was always there to catch him, “time after time.”
Reflecting on my own life, a wave of gratitude washes over me. A loving wife, four incredible children, and a forgiving God – these are the anchors that have held me steady throughout life’s storms. They have been there to catch me when I stumbled, to find me when I felt lost, a constant echo of “time after time” in the face of adversity.
And so, the cycle continues. As I’ve been blessed with unwavering support, my greatest wish is to embody that same unwavering presence for them. To be the hand that reaches out, the voice that offers comfort, the unwavering promise – “time after time.”
