He departed from him until an opportune time. — Luke 4:13.
This verse marks the end of the devil’s initial temptation of Jesus, but it also raises a crucial question: When is the “opportune time” for the devil to strike?
The phrase opportune time reminds me of the movie line, “I’ll be back.” Just as the villain in films often returns at a moment of vulnerability, the devil seems to time his attacks strategically. For Jesus, these moments included the Garden of Gethsemane and the Cross.
The acronym HALT (Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired) is a useful framework for understanding human vulnerability. When we are in these states, we are more susceptible to temptation and negative emotions. However, it’s important to note that our “opportune times” can be more nuanced. They might also involve moments of stress, doubt, fear, or isolation.
The key to overcoming temptation is twofold: recognition and defense. We must be aware of our personal triggers and vulnerabilities. By understanding what makes us susceptible to temptation, we can take proactive steps to avoid or mitigate those situations.
Secondly, we must equip ourselves with the armor of light (Ephesians 6:13), which includes:
- Truth: Understanding God’s Word and His promises.
- Righteousness: Living a life that aligns with God’s principles.
- Peace: Cultivating inner peace through prayer and meditation.
- Faith: Trusting in God’s sovereignty and goodness.
- Salvation: Knowing that we are saved by God’s grace.
By recognizing our vulnerabilities and actively putting on the armor of light, we can better resist the devil’s attacks and remain steadfast in our faith.
