Jesus’ simple command, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake,” (Luke 8:22) seems innocuous enough, a peaceful afternoon outing perhaps. But the context reveals a deeper meaning. In those days, the other side of the lake was home to the Gentiles, a people considered unclean and separate from the Jews. It was a journey into the unknown, a crossing of cultural and religious divides.
Today, our world remains divided, often along lines of race, religion, nationality, and sexual orientation. Like the disciples, we are called to venture beyond our familiar shores and into the unfamiliar waters of difference. It’s a journey that requires courage, empathy, and a willingness to challenge our own biases.
Jesus’ invitation to “go across to the other side” is not merely a suggestion; it’s a divine mandate. By reaching out to those who are different from us, we not only fulfill a moral obligation but also pave the way for a more just and peaceful world. So let us embark on this journey, knowing that while it may be challenging, it is ultimately a voyage towards unity and love.
