Special Place

He came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives. — Luke 22:39.

In the quiet solitude of the Mount of Olives, Jesus sought solace and spiritual renewal. This sacred retreat, a familiar haven, was a place where he could commune with his Father, undisturbed by the demands of his earthly ministry. This scene from Luke’s Gospel mirrors a universal human experience: the longing for a quiet sanctuary where we can connect with the divine.

Throughout our lives, we each cultivate our own special places, sanctuaries where we retreat from the noise of the world and delve into the depths of our souls. As children, these sanctuaries might be as simple as a cozy nook, under the covers, or a secret hideaway in the woods. As we grow older, our sanctuaries evolve, adapting to the changing seasons of our lives. They might be serene natural landscapes, quiet urban corners, or even the quietude of our minds.

The need to be alone with God is a timeless yearning, as relevant today as it was in the time of Jesus. In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, it can be challenging to carve out moments of solitude. Yet, these quiet moments are essential for spiritual growth, emotional well-being, and a deeper connection with the divine.

Where is your special place? Is it a tranquil garden, a peaceful meditation room, or a quiet corner of your home? Perhaps it’s a solitary walk in nature or a quiet drive with your thoughts. Once my special place was behind the wheel of an Austin-Healy 3000 on a Sunday afternoon. Wherever it may be, make time to visit this sacred space regularly. Let it be a place where you can recharge your spirit, find inspiration, and deepen your relationship with God.
