Darkness

But whoever hates another believer is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness, has brought on blindness. — 1 John 2:11.

Apostle John’s assertion reveals a basic truth in life’s struggle. How often do we observe the destructive force of hate, not only between individuals of different faiths or beliefs but also in the daily rifts that fracture our relationships? We all know someone whose consuming hatred seems to cloud their judgment entirely. Speaking honestly, I too have experienced times when anger and animosity have obscured my vision. It stands as a testament to God’s grace that I regained clarity.

This “darkness” John speaks of isn’t limited by religious boundaries; it descends upon us whenever we allow hatred to take hold of our hearts. Like a suffocating shadow, it diminishes our capacity for empathy, warps our understanding, and ultimately isolates us from one another. My deepest hope for my children and grandchildren is that their lives are always rooted in a home where hatred finds no refuge, no invitation.

Life inevitably presents its own set of obstacles. Why willingly inflict ourselves the additional burden of blindness that hate brings? To navigate life’s complexities with open hearts and minds, to recognize the shared humanity that binds us even across our differences, is to actively choose a path illuminated by understanding, personal growth, and meaningful connection. May we all endeavor to keep the pathways of our hearts clear, allowing compassion to be our guiding light.
