One of the many benefits of writing a daily meditation is that friends send you material. My friend Rob sent me a motherlode recently, including the following quote from John Beevers:
True mystics are always much more practical than the ordinary run of people. They seek reality; we too often are satisfied with the ephemeral. They want God as he is; we want God as we imagine him to be.”
Of course, I had to check the definition of Ephemeral — “lasting a very short time; short-lived; transitory: the ephemeral joys of childhood.”
Now I am not so sure about childhood joys being short lived. I remember a lot of my childhood, and I have friends who still haven’t grown up, but I understand what the dictionary people have in mind as did Beevers. If one were to define the attention span of the current generation, or there would be one word for American Society today it just might be ephemeral — The Ephemeral Society sounds a lot more descriptive than “the Millennials.”
So imagine my fascination when I googled “ephemeral” and once I got to “eph” up popped not only ephemeral but several references to Ephesians including Ephesians 4 — “lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called….” (More of the material Rob sent as well one of my favorite Biblical quotes.)
To me, an Ephemeral Society is at polar opposites of a society filled with people living a life worthy of God’s call. Not a bad thing to think about as we begin the first week of August. let me know what you think. W.
