We just finished celebrating All Saints Day. I think that in most cases the men and women we recognize as Saints had one thing in common — they never saw themselves as extraordinary; they saw what they did and who they were as very ordinary and not particularly special.
This is consistent with Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount where he reminds us that the “first shall be last” and the “poor shall inherit.” The Christianity that has at its basis Christ’s words turns the world upside down and on it’s ear.
Our society looks to the extraordinary — the gifted, the rich, the powerful and the prideful. Yet, if we really seek God and his Saints look to the ordinary and the humble.
