First Friday in the Week of Lent

Whoever gossips to you will gossip about you. — Spanish proverb

Listening to or spreading gossip is a good thing to give up for Lent and for all time for that matter. I know our trust is well placed when we trust in God, but we also need friends who we can trust to keep our confidences. When we gossip or listen to gossip we are breaking the bonds of one of God’s greatest gifts — friendship. It is difficult in a social setting to turn our ears away from gossip, but think of what signal it sends when you do. You mark yourself as a friend in whose confidence a person can trust. A mark each of us should carry proudly.
