The Dash In Between

Walk through a cemetery and most headstones bear the name of the deceased and the year of birth and the year of death with a dash in between.

I find it amazing that for many of us the dash symbolizes all of our accomplishments and failures, our loves and and our losses, and so much more.
Not all headstones are that way, but walking through a cemetery I find myself wondering about the dashes. What does each stand for?
It makes me think about my dash. They say God gives us two gifts at birth — a purpose and the tools to accomplish that purpose. Will my dash symbolize success in reaching God’s purpose?
The dash happens so quickly. We all wish for a long dash, but know its the quality of the dash that counts.
There are those who think its only the numbers that count — date of birth and date when he/she returns home. But for me I want to concentrate on the dash.
Next time you see a headstone pay attention to the dash it is there where life is lived.
