By charity, goodness, restraint, and self-control, men and woman alike can store up a well-hidden treasure — a treasure which cannot be given to others and which robbers cannot steal. — Khuddhaka Patha
Our true self is something that cannot be stolen, but we often give it away to other’s demands.
I agree with the above Buddhist wisdom, but add a caveat. The treasure we accumulate by charity, goodness, etc., cannot be given away to someone else or stolen, but we have the ability to throw it away.
So I suggest we store up treasure by acts of charity, goodness, restraint and self-control, but be wary of those who know it can’t be stolen or given away so they seek to have you do what they cannot do — waste one’s treasure and give away your own true self.
