O my Lord, please send somebody else. Exodus 4:13.
Have you ever sent out such a prayer. I certainly have, and it’s not impossible I will be called on again.
It has been suggested that Chapter Four of Exodus gives Moses and each of us four voices to use when confronting injustice.
The first is the voice of force and fear, symbolized by the rod becoming a snake.
The second is the voice of mystery and magic, symbolized by making Moses’ hand leprous at will.
The third is the voice of authority, illustrated by Moses using Aaron the priest.
Sadly, must of us, when called to speak out or persuade, don’t have the benefit of mystery, fear, power, or authority.
We must speak using our own personal experience and observations. Like Moses we may not be eloquent, but when we speak with the voice of personal concern and commitment there is no more powerful voice.
