Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right. — Henry Ford
Do or do not, there is no try — Yoda
I can’t think of two characters more opposite, Yoda and Henry Ford. One was an industrialist who actually lived. The other is a fictional Jedi master. Yet they sound quite alike above, both suggesting you either accomplish what you set out to do or you don’t there is no middle ground. Sounds simple, right? Not!
They both would probably suggest that we are more capable than we realize, and that by saying “I’ll try we are starting off with the wrong attitude.
Maybe we begin a shift in attitude, by instead of responding to a request we don’t say, “I’ll try,” but instead say “Certainly, I will.”
Editors Note: For those of you who remember when the Hubbell Pew began, I would occasionally the four year old philosophers, Will and Jake. Well the philosophers are now 17 and seniors in college. They are coming for a week to Charlotte to visit colleges and hopefully replenish my supply of great wisdom. I’m excited.
