His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned: he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him.” — John 9: 2-3.
I’ve read this passage several times and read it literally each time — that the man was born blind so on that very day God through his son would be able to cure this man. It was all part of a plan. But this time I read it a different way.
We all sin, we all experience times when we feel cursed, or that we can’t catch a break. We think, “What did I do to deserve this horrible fate?”
Truth is we did nothing, and we are asking the wrong question. We should be asking, “How can I know and experience God’s blessing in the midst of my misery? How by rethinking this situation can I be a source of grace?”
If God can spit on the ground, make a little mud, apply it to a man’s eyes, and cure blindness; what blessing is in store for me or you if we only open our eyes to the possibility that through our situation God’s work will be revealed.
Haven’t you known someone who was ill or in dire straits, but their faith was strong, and God worked a miracle through him or her, revealing God’s works? I certainly have. We need only open our eyes to the possibility right in front of us.
