Pray That You May Not Come Into the Time of Trial

Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial. — Luke 22:46

It is interesting to me that practically the last words Jesus said to his disciples as a group before he was lead away to his death are the words above. He didn’t say it once but twice. Then again what does any parent want for their children — “that they may not come into the time of trial.” So maybe it does make sense.

When I read about Jesus asking God to “remove this cup” (Luke 22:42) I am reminded of Faulkner’s words: “There comes a time in the life of every man when the world turns its dark side to him and every man’s shadow is his mortal enemy. Then he must turn his eyes to God or perish.” — The Leg.

Luke and Faulkner present opposite sides one of life’s great dilemmas. On one side we pray that the time of trial may not come, especially for those we love, and yet we know that for some of us the cup of trial will touch our lips.

Perhaps the solution is to know it is okay to pray that the time of trial not come, but if it does come, comfort awaits when we turn to God.
