In the tempestuous ocean of time and toil there is an island of stillness where a man may enter a harbor and reclaim his dignity. That island is the seventh day. — Rabbi Abraham Heschel
I read recently that on the Sabbath Jesus only performed one kind of miracle — healing. I think we as a society have forgotten the Sabbath’s original intent no matter what day you observe it. The sabbath wasn’t meant to burden or restrict, but to free — freedom from work and obligations.
Our weeks are so filled of whirling blur of forces, temptations, choices, and consequences we need a day of rest even more than ever. We need a regular time whether its a day or an afternoon where time stops. In this 24/7 work world how does one break the chains of enslavement to work?
This week reclaim the sabbath in your life. Find a time to turn of all electronic devices, especially America’s current and universal addiction — the cellphone. Not like the Pharisees to lord it over others, but to free yourself.
The person you heal on your new Sabbath is likely to be yourself.
