In the latest movie about Churchill, Winston is being introduced to his new secretary who is a big fan and supporter. She explains why by saying he never gave up on Britain. He says to her, “I won’t give up on you.”
It was one of the better moments in the movie which wasn’t very flattering to Churchill, but was to his wife Clementine. She was indeed a woman worth studying.
But I digress because I was taken by the words, “I won’t give up on you.” I think those words describe the relationship God has with each and every one of us. He won’t give up on us, and thus is so tolerant with our mistakes and foibles. He forgives and he never gives up on us no matter how many times we fall and stray.
Not giving up on someone is also a mark of a great friend. No matter what someone does, a true friend doesn’t give up on his or her friend. It’s call unconditional friendship and loyalty. I think this world could use a lot more loyalty these days. I notice a lot of people willing to drop a friend at the drop of the hat when it is in their best interest. Loyalty seems to be a lost virtue these days.
Every marriage will reach a point where one or both spouses must look at the other and say, “I won’t give up on you.” I know Suzy has pulled me up from the depths of despair not using those words, but in every action she took and takes.
Which brings me to the person from whom you need most to hear the words, “I won’t give up on you.” The man or woman in the mirror — yourself. We know God will never give up on us, but each of us needs to never give up on his or herself.
In your daily meditation consider whether there is someone in your life who needs to hear from you, “I will never give up on you.” If so take moment to tell him or her those very words, especially if the person is you.
