Dear Tom:
On this day where I am in mourning the loss of the Sugar Bowl, I admit to some somber musing. I have never been one to believe that we accomplish much when we ask God to intervene in sporting events. I don’t think he causes fumbles, or helps one make a free throw. However, I do believe that God sometimes speaks through events. What do you think?
I have written you before about how the smell of honeysuckle or a young child’s smile can be the voice of God. Why should it be any less that God speaks when we read about great miracle or tragedy. The problem is knowing which event is part of the voice of God, and which isn’t. Just as difficult is what is God trying to say? If I were to try and express in my most thoughtful terms the meaning of what God is saying through the events in our lives I would fail as miserably as last night’s intercepted pass. Yet, I believes he speaks nonetheless, and he asks me to seek out that meaning in the events of my own experience.
So today I am sitting quietly, wearing mourning black, and trying to seek out meaning of events other than Razorback football.
Your Friend, Webb
