Nothing is sadder than a man or woman who can’t laugh at his or herself. If I could give our leaders one bit of advice it would be lighten up, find a little joy in what you are doing, and don’t be afraid to make fun of yourself. Yes, I know that in this “gotcha world’ of cell phone cameras and social media it is easy for self-depreciating humor to be easily misinterpreted, but I don’t think we want humorless leadership. Abe Lincoln is considered by many to be our greatest present, and he was constantly searching for joy in the midst of horrible times, and always willing to make fun of himself.
We have an obligation to our children to teach them humility, humor and to search for joy even in grief. This task begins at home and is taught by example. If you are a joyful person especially during tragedy your joy rubs off. I’m convinced that God has a great sense of humor, his world is full of things that make us laugh and smile. Who wants to be around a naysayer or humorless person for any length of time?
The search for joy in one’s day is indeed a sign of wisdom.
