I grew up watching Superman on TV. I also used to tie a towel around my neck pretending it was a cape and jump out of trees. I tried it once off the roof of our house, turns out that wasn’t a good idea.
Just like Superman is fiction, so is our culture — always searching, hoping, and looking for that giant step, that larger than life leap, or that heroic effort that will bring us success. When real progress is made with small steps — What about Bob‘s baby steps.
Even when we encounter what appears to be an overnight success, in reality it is the result of a long and patient process. You’ve heard in physics about quantum leaps? A true quantum leap is what happens when a subatomic particle jumps to a higher level of energy. But is happens as a gradual buildup of potential caused by energy being applied to the particle over a long time.
When it come’s to one’s faith don’t expect an overnight conversion or revelation in the desert. Through a daily routine of meditation, prayer, reading, and good works our faith strengthens much like beginning an exercise program with a single push-up and adding one push-up a day until our body and strength steadily increases. Jesus said, faith can move mountains, but moving mountains occurs only after a gradual buildup, not a single push.
