Turn around, every now and then I get a little bit lonely
And you’re never coming round
Turn around, every now and then I get a little bit tired
Of listening to the sound of my tears — Bonnie Tyler
Last year we had a total eclipse of the sun, a once in a lifetime experience for many. During the lead up to the eclipse I must have heard Bonnie’s song at least ten times, but for some reason never focused on the lyrics. A link to the full set is found at the bottom of this post, and although her words were meant for her lover, they also could be slightly modified to describe one’s relationship to God. It can be considered as a prayer.
One definition of repent is to turn around. Lent is not necessarily about repentance, but it is about going in a different direction. A life where God comes first and we come second. We begin Lent with the reminder of our humanity on Ash Wednesday. This ritual is not my favorite, probably because it hits too close to home. I suspect that is it’s intended purpose, a solemn reminder that we are mortal.
I read recently that an early Christian Monk was asked what monks did every day. He replied, “We fall down, and we get back up; we fall down and get back up.”
Lent is forty days of falling and getting back up.
