… love is wise, hatred is foolish. In this world, which is getting more and more closely interconnected, we have to learn to tolerate each other. We have to learn to put up with the fact that some people say things that we don’t like. We can only live together in that way and if we are to live together and not die together, we must learn the kind of charity and the kind of tolerance which is absolutely vital to the continuation of human life on this planet. — Bertrand Russell
On many occasions I have hear someone say, “I can’t tolerate that person.” Certainly our leaders seem to think it is more important to despise and not tolerate people who disagree with them, and that attitude is at the root cause of our problems today.
Tolerance has to rise to the top of our list of characteristics we seek and aspire, right there with love. We don’t have to agree with everyone, we don’t have to like everyone, we don’t have to be pals with everyone, but as Russell says we should tolerate them.
