When I practiced law, I had a long list of to-do’s that I was constantly updating, I kept the same habit at Justice and when I worked for Mclaughlin. When Suzy gets overwhelmed she pulls out an index card and organizes her to-do’s until they are all done and crossed through. I bet you have your own system.
Problem is when it comes to my life my list turns to a list of don’ts. Don’t overeat, don’t eat too much red meat, don’t lose your temper, don’t forget, etc. until my mental list of don’ts exceeds my list of to-do’s.
It has taken me a long time to realize that when it comes to one’s life, spiritual and physical, I should change my list of don’ts to a list of to-do’s. Buy that comfortable chair you have always coveted, give yourself time in each day for eight hours of sleep, wake up slowly and meditate, leave time in your day to exercise, etc.
Take time to organize your day, week, and year to give you time to enjoy living as opposed to enduring life. Take back roads, walk on beaches, hike to waterfalls, and take more naps. When someone tries to cram one more meeting into your day, tries to schedule a morning conference call during your mediation time, or insists you cancel the long anticipate date with your spouse to entertain a client, say no without guilt or regret.
May your life’s to-do list be a reminder to live your desires, and to channel the joy of living.
Excellent reminders, Webb… came at a good time for me. Thank you!!!
