I will not let anyone walk through my mind with dirty feet. — Attributed to Mahatma Gandhi.
The above is another gem I found in Bonnie Whitehouse’s journal, Afoot and Lighthearted. I can really relate to Gandhi’s thought.
Lately I’ve felt bombarded by politics of hate, division, and lack of cooperation. I am a yellow dog, but I fear that both sides of the aisle have no respect for the other and are unwilling to listen to each other. Twenty four hours news contributes to this walking through my mind with feet covered in mud or worse.
It is a challenge to keep from putting on muddy feet and go trampling myself, but I know it is a challenge I must overcome. Sometimes this challenge requires that I turn off the TV and forego reading a lot of “news,” but it is worth it. Some might say I am burying my head in the sand, and they are partially right. But I learned a lesson about mud slinging a long time ago.
When one engages in mud slinging and trampling through puddles, it is me that needs the bath.
I agree! For my own sanity in addition to my attempt to live in a way consistent with my faith I often take “news vacations”. Lately I find myself making snarky comments on Twitter in response to tweets from my Republican senators (I too am “yellow dog”) not to mention that guy in the White House. It’s a fine line we walk today between being well-informed and living in a way that’s consistent with our Christian values. May the good Lord help us!
