A friend wrote recently about the use of the cross by the Romans. Not only is it torture and it instills fear in the hearts of witnesses, but even worse it is “the terrifying reality of complete abandonment.” I think the same can be said of a more modern form of torture — lynching.
We don’t have to be hung on a cross or lynched to experience “complete abandonment.” Spouses leave their partners without reason, parents walk away from their children, and ever so sadly the elderly are relegated to a “home” or worse by their children. I bet you know of hundred other forms of abandonment. I thought of many this morning. I wonder if one day we will look on these times as “The Age of Abandonment.”
The good news is that no matter what we might of done, and how lonely we feel and are left, God is always there. God will never abandon us regardless of who we are or what we have done. Talk about comfort!
