For almost ten years I do the simplest of things once a week, every week. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me and how therapeutic it is.
For you see, almost ten years ago I was given two gifts — one was very complicated and super expensive, the other was simple and free. The former was a new liver that saved my life. The latter was a pill box from CVS to help me keep track of the many medicines I had to take after the surgery. Fortunately, I still have them both.
Once a week, I sit down with my pill box and fill it with medicines for the upcoming week. It has seven tubes for each day of the week, and each tube has four little sub compartments for morning, noon, afternoon, and night. I could probably refill the pillbox blindfolded, but I don’t. Instead I take my time counting out the pills and dropping them in the appropriate sub compartment. (Not as easy as it seems with a man who has an essential tremor.) The whole process doesn’t take that long, but its therapeutic. Probably because its a weekly reminder of the gift of life I’ve received.
As I filled my box this morning I thought what other “simplest of things” link us to the major things in our life — health, family, and yes, even God. In some ways we find God in the simplest of things rather than the biggest and most complicated. What is in your life that is so very simple, but is a link to the “greatest of all things?”
PS: Every now and then I consider getting a new pill box, but then again I say, “I think I’ll keep the one I have.”
