Embrace The Still

People call and I call people these days. We are all reaching out to each other and that’s a very good thing. Yet, our conversations usually turn awkward when someone asks, “What have you been doing?” Each of us comes up with a version of something like, “I’m walking a lot more, we are working puzzles, learning to make grandma’s recipe for biscuits, etc.” What we are really saying is, “I’m doing a whole lot of nothing.”

What we don’t acknowledge is even when nothing is happening, something is happening. We are so used to activity, “staying busy,” and working 24/7, that we all have difficulty accepting this new normal of being “sheltered in.” We shouldn’t forget to embrace the silence and peace of our own homes. Silence is a form of speech, and stillness is a form of action.

Holy week is a time to worship God, and God hears us best in the still and quiet. Embrace the still. It brings you closer to God.
