We Are Well Able To Overcome It

… for we are well able to overcome it. — Numbers 13:30.

I first heard the song “We shall overcome” when I attended a basketball game between Pine Bluff A&M and Grambling. A small group of my buddies wanted to see some “real basketball.” The music and lyrics still stick with me, and it is most appropriate to remember it on Juneteenth.

Suzy and I were talking last night. I had attended a fully masked and socially distanced breakfast with my friends who used to meet at a table for breakfast every Thursday morning. Suzy that afternoon went to a socially distanced cocktail hour with her book club which hadn’t met since March. So we discussed how much we missed during this virus human interaction. Nothing is as bad as losing thousands of lives everyday, but right below that tragedy is the pain caused by the cure. Each of us need human interaction whether it be church, work with colleagues, school mates, neighbors, family, and yes breakfast groups and book clubs.

I don’t have a solution to racism or the virus, but I believe like the song “We shall overcome.”

We shall overcome, we shall overcome,
We shall overcome someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall overcome someday.
The Lord will see us through, The Lord will see us through,
The Lord will see us through someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall overcome someday.
We’re on to victory, We’re on to victory,
We’re on to victory someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We’re on to victory someday.
We’ll walk hand in hand, we’ll walk hand in hand,
We’ll walk hand in hand someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We’ll walk hand in hand someday.
We are not afraid, we are not afraid,
We are not afraid today;
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We are not afraid today.
The truth shall make us free, the truth shall make us free,
The truth shall make us free someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
The truth shall make us free someday.
We shall live in peace, we shall live in peace,
We shall live in peace someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall live in peace someday.

  1. Love these words, Webb.
    I’ve become so disappointed in the responses and actions of our “leaders” during this time.
    Early yesterday Mayor Scott issued a statement requiring all people who are outside I. Little Rock must wear masks.
    Before nightfall Governor Hutchison issued a statement saying Mayor Scott had no legal authority to require masks.
    Hutchison is a Trump Republican. While he ignores safety precautions which Trump disbelieves, our state now spikes every day.

    1. Thanks Becks. Hope you are staying safe and healthy. I worry about the rise in numbers in Arkansas, but that’s going to happen when you stop distancing and not wearing masks. Stay safe. Webb.
