Lila loves butterflies. Who doesn’t? I read recently that we should remember butterflies when we consider people’s lives. How often have you known a friend who is living in their own self-constructed cocoon, surrounded by their self created threads of life and entanglements. We want to help them, we know they can be a beautiful butterfly, but they can’t escape their current ties. In these situations, it helps to remember the butterfly and the cocoon, because if you break the cocoon too early the caterpillar can never become a butterfly.
We have to, at times, let our friend undergo the transformation like the butterfly. When her wings are strong enough, she will emerge from the pupa, crack open her cocoon, and fly. When we see someone we love spinning themselves into a shell, it may be time to let it happen with love, to wait patiently for our friend to emerge from her/his shell on their own. Soon enough will our friend fly again in all her splendor, and the cocoon will be discarded to the wind.
