Dear Tom:
I have written to you often about how God communicates through the smallest of gestures the “smell of honeysuckle,” the smallest of signs from a stranger, or the smile of a young child. He communicates with each of us, individually. More often than we choose to realize, God speaks to us in an intensely personal and unmistakable way. But does God have some things to say to us a whole? Clearly, I am not talking about a press conference on CNN, and if he did I probably would be tuned into ESPN. I am also not expecting rapture tomorrow at 6:00 P.M. tomorrow, either.( Needless to say, many a preacher will look upon their flock this Sunday and breathe a sigh of relief.) Nor am I talking about the Ten Commandments, the Koran, the writings of Confucius, etc.
Are there some things he is saying to us as a whole, to each and every one of us? At times, I believe he does, and we know more about what he is saying than we care to admit. He is talking to all of us in the eyes of the homeless person we meet in the street, and whether we choose to look her in the eye or not. He is talking to us when someone says something cruel or hateful about another, and we choose to laugh with the group or say something. He talks to us when we are alone when our thoughts swarm with ugly or self-destructing thoughts, will we cast them aside or embrace them.
All those little skirmishes we experience every day seem to be so insignificant, and yet it is precisely in these moments that God speaks to us words of great significance – be brave, be merciful, feed my children and continue on with life.
Your Friend, Webb
