Dear Tom,
The Sufi master Hazrat Khan talks about purity of the mind. He says our minds can accomplish wondrous things but it is always weighted down. He suggest the mind needs to be nourished and purified. We nourish our mind with thoughts that are harmonious and productive of beauty. We purify the mind with these same elements analogizing — harmony with water and beauty with soap. These are interesting images, and in the quiet of meditation it can be productive to quietly picture harmony and beauty washing the impurities away from our brain.
Outside of the quiet of meditation the impurities latch on to our brain again. These impurities include worry, anxiety, fear, sorrow or any type of disturbance that disrupts the tranquility of the mind. Imagine a group of gnats buzzing around disturbing the joy and peace we wish to enjoy. But in real life, how do we deal with the demands of life and yet keep our mind free and pure?
How do I free the mind so it is not so weighed down that it cannot function, much less function at peak capacity. I know many brilliant people who are capable, but are rendered incapable of accomplishment by the weight of worry. Their plight is not unusual, rare is the case where it is not so. We all on occasion find ourselves helpless in a difficult situation, but we seldom realize that not only is the situation difficult, but also there is difficulty in our mind as well.
All this said, if we are able to free our mind from the weight and annoyance of all that disturbs its tranquility, by purification and nourishment, we realize in ourselves the tremendous power we are able to generate. When often we seek power from without, it is from within that a mere mustard seed of faith that can move the mountain.
