The Great Divide

Because I am giving a lecture today on “What Happens Next” I’ve been reading a great deal about the election. (I think the group that invited me thought the election would turn out differently, and now they are stuck with me.)

I can’t tell you how many times in the last few weeks that I have read words to this effect: “The gap between the elites and the mass population has reached unprecedented levels.”
Well I hate to break this to the pundits but that Gap has been there for a long time. Remember Luke 15:2 — This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.
Today we read the Bible and look on the Pharisees as snobs, but in reality the law at the time obliged the “law-abiders” to separate from people who would compromise their holiness.
I bet you know people who still think that way today. What drives the Pharisees and elites today is the same — fear. In ancient times it was fear of losing their sense of closeness to God, today one might think that its fear of losing the feeling of superiority and rightness.
Then comes Jesus and once again he turns the world upside down. He being as close to God as they come was without fear, living freely and joyfully.
If the great divide is growing as pundits suggest, remember God’s words “be not afraid,” and follow Jesus’s example and make an effort to bridge the divide between the have’s and have-nots.
