A Face That Is Set

(Jesus) set his face to go to Jerusalem — Luke 9:51

The term “set his face” is interesting and intentional.
It reminds me of my old football coach, Mervin Johnson, who used to come on the team bus and holler, “put your game face on.”
He meant no more smiles, no more jokes, or horseplay. “Put your game face on” meant it was time to get serious and focus our thoughts and bodies on the task before us.
Jesus too finally understood what he was to do, so he gritted his teeth and turned his face toward’s his final task — Jerusalem.
We are seldom certain about what we are called to do, at times we are confused and full of doubt, but after that period of confusion comes the light of certainty.
When that occurs and it will, set your face and with all the determination and courage you can muster and go forward with a face that is set.
