Wake Up! Are You Going To Sleep Your Life Away?

Wake Up! This command is not just meant to get us out from under the covers, it’s meant to be how we live our life!
Consciousness, Awareness, Living in the moment, Seize the day, Mindfulness, there are so many programs to in simple words mean “Wake Up!”
On my sabbatical, I had a cellmate who in order to endure his time in our monastery slept at least sixteen hours a day. He’d say, “Big Easy, when I’m asleep I’m not confined, I’m not scared, and I’m free.” I understood his philosophy it just wasn’t for me.
He was literally trying to sleep away his last two years in the monastery, similar to many teenagers finishing out their senior year in high school.
The question we should ask ourselves is whether we are sleeping our life away while we are awake. My football coach would call it “going through the motions.”
I love sleep as much, or maybe even more, as the next man or woman, but when I’m awake I need to be alert and conscious to God’s many blessings.
Start this next week by promising yourself during your morning meditation to be awake and to not sleep your life away.
