Fulfill The Deepest Capacities Of Our Real Selves

We must make choices that enable us to fulfill the deepest capacities of our real selves. — Thomas Merton

Some people dread Monday. It’s time to return to work, get the kids in school, and in the words of Tennessee Ernie Ford they become “Another Day Older and Deeper In Debt.” (I bet I have a few readers who don’t even know who Tennessee Ernie Ford was. If not click on the link.)

However for many Monday may be the only day they get a break from work. I remember barber shops used to be closed on Mondays along with a lot of other personal service businesses that were open on Saturday. For me, my attitude has changed from dreading Monday’s to looking forward to a new week, a new beginning, and a chance for something wonderful to happen! That’s right, — for something wonderful to happen.

Monday can begin with a prayer inspired by Merton. “Lord help me to make good choices.”

Merton’s words inspire us to not only think but realize that inside each and every one of us is the potential to “fulfill the deepest capacities of our real selves.” Now, isn’t that exciting to think about. Have you ever considered what are my “deepest capacities,” and paused to ask who is my true self? Monday is the day to engage in such a meditation, You might just be surprised at God’s answer and what choices you have to make.

This Monday ask God to help you to make the right choices and then go out and discover that something wonderful is about to happen!
