How Do I Get Comfortable In My Own Skin?

The worst loneliness is not to be comfortable with yourself. — Mark Twain.

I don’t know when it began but the phrase “being comfortable in one’s own skin” has been with us for a while. And boy are their lots of books, podcasts, youtubes, and seminars that try to convince you they have the answer. It reminds me of the young stockbroker who used to tell me that a certain stock was, “the next big thing.” Turns out whatever he was touting wasn’t a big thing after all.

Wisdom and age teaches us that whether it’s stocks, our own skin, or our relationship with our friends, family, or God the question that needs to be asked is what works and has for the last decade or longer. Instead of chasing Bitcoins or the latest fad diet we should be asking what works and what hasn’t changed in the last ten years because it does.

How does one get comfortable in one’s own skin? Ask yourself what makes you comfortable, and nurture that part of you. It’s not rocket science. When I was on sabbatical several of my brothers and I worked on our faith life. It wasn’t a complicated process, since there was nothing complicated about our lives where we lived. Our daily routine included prayer, worship, reading a few pages of the Bible, reading a few pages someone else had written about faith, and once a week talking among ourselves about what we learned. It worked, and it continues to work for me twenty years later.
