The More Loving One

How should we like it were stars to burn

With a passion for us we could not return?

If equal affection cannot be,

Let the more loving one be me. — W. H. Auden, The More Loving One.

We have a chance to be the more loving one than anyone else except God whose love is unconditional, forgiving, and all in. We are most like God’s image when we love unconditionally and understand that our passion for another cannot be reciprocal.

When we demand that our love be returned in equal affection we miss the point. Love must be freely given without any expectation of it being returned.
