The Power Of Human Compassion

Then Jesus called the twelve together… and he sent them out … and to heal. — Luke 9:1-2.

What a glorious gift we have all been given — to heal. No, I don’t mean that we all have been given miraculous powers or to cure with the laying on of our hands. I’m talking about the power of human compassion and love.

We all have the ability to comfort the sick, listen to the troubled, and to heal in a thousand ways. Sometimes, a phone call, a handwritten note, or a plate of cookies can have more healing power than the strongest of antibiotics. The power of presence or a gentle touch often means more to the recipient than a surgeon’s scapel.

God has given us all a degree of the healing power he gave his son and his disciples. It is our duty to use the power in a way that honors God.
